Have you ever wondered how someone could leave an unfinished glass of wine while dining out? Maybe you drank too much the night before and don’t remember anything at all past a certain time? Or maybe you need a couple cocktails to wind down after work? Sometimes it’s hard to know when — or even if — drinking is taking over your life. While everyone is different, there are some common warning signs of alcohol addiction to look out for.
1. You can quit any time! Except, you can’t…
Ever told yourself, “I won’t drink tonight”? Or, “I’ll just have one.” Repeatedly setting limits before having drinks and then repeatedly blowing right past them is an early sign you may be developing or already have a problem.
2. A hangover feels like your normal state.
Sandpaper dry mouth, pounding headache, nausea — sound familiar? Suffering from the effects of hangovers multiple times a week is the most obvious sign your drinking may be excessive and could be spiraling into a more serious issue. Do you even remember what it feels like to wake up without one?
3. You’re starting to feel like this isn’t a “normal” level of partying.
If you’re beginning to question whether or not you are drinking too much, then it might be time to listen to your gut. Analyze whether alcohol is taking over your life, both while out and at home. Are you able to socialize without a drink? Are you cutting back on seeing friends or participating in activities if they don’t involve booze? Do you bring your own drinks so you know you’ll get enough?
If you can’t ask those questions, ask your friends and family. Loved ones know you well and usually want the best for you, so if they are starting to raise concerns, it might be time to take an honest look at your drinking habits.
