Addiction Treatment: How Music Therapy Can Help

Not everyone is always able to summon up the right words to fully express their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes it’s just easier to express everything that’s bottled up inside in a non-verbal and more creative way.

At The Mend, holistic therapy, including the use of music, has become an integral part of processing all those emotions and everything that is going on inside that can sometimes seem so overwhelming.

Holistic therapy doesn’t just treat the symptoms of chronic addiction, it also works to treat overall wellness, which includes caring for the body, spirit, mind and emotions.

In particular, our music therapy sessions allow residents to express parts of themselves that may have been buried deep or snuffed out because of chronic substance use disorder.

Music therapy sessions at The Mend often include live musicians, and the sessions are a way to switch gears from talk therapy to a nonverbal form of communication and expression.

We also offer breathwork — breathing techniques which, like music therapy, have a positive effect on your state of mind and overall health. Both work toward encouraging mindfulness to improve overall wellbeing.

The benefits of music therapy is just another way The Mend works to arm our residents with the best tools to battle negative thoughts, behaviors and other triggers that can increase the chance of relapse after detox and inpatient or outpatient treatment is done.
